Day 57: Katherine, Here We Come

Today we were going to leave Juno Horse Centre and heading to Katherine. We packed up and then went into town to stock before heading off. We got to the Three-Ways Roadhouse and stopped there for lunch which was only sausage rolls and pie. Then we found a little monument called Flynn's Memorial (you probably remember Flynn's Grave and Flynn's Uniting Church). We then got to Renner Springs which is a small little pub just like the pub at William Creek-all of these collectables all over the roof and walls. We then went to a little place called Elliot, to tell you the truth it was actually a very sad place. We eventually stopped at a little place at Newcastle Waters and chatted with a couple of people before having dinner a going to bed.

Day 56: Another Night at Juno

Today we were heading off to Katherine, maybe. We actually decided to stay another night at Juno Horse Centre. We got up and went into town to go to church. When we got there church was just about to start. so we found our seats and sang a song. We sat through church for about 2hrs before going home. We sat around all day doing nothing, the only things we did were schoolwork and stuff. It eventually got to the time that we started to build the fire. Like the previous night all we did was talk then go to bed after a little while.

Day 55: Outskirts of Tennant Creek

Today we were packing up and going out to the Juno Horse Centre just on the outskirts of Tennant Creek. Arrived at Juno Horse Centre at about 11am, got settled in and went to look at a couple of sights around Tennant Creek. While we were setting up a mob of horses from the station ran past.

We went out to "The Pebbles" further out of town and turned off to go into them.

We went for the 15min walk around them - they are like a miniature Devils Marbles.

We left there and then went tot Tennant Creek Telegraph Station further in. There wasn't much to see because all the doors were locked so we just wlked around the buildings and read the signs about them. There was a graveyard a couple of meters down the road so we walked there and had a look. There were only 2 gravrs there.

We then went to Lake Mary Ann and had a look. It was beautiful and you could walk along the edge of it.

After we'd finished looking there it was off to the town to do some shopping and do a couple of things. It was then back to the station to set up the fire. We had dinner-which was cooked on the fire-with some friends that we'd met that day.

After that it was off to bed to get a good nights sleep

Day 54: Hello Tennant Creek

Today we were going to Tennant Creek.  We got up that morning to a beautiful sunrise before we got back on the road again.

We travelled 100km  down the road before getting to Tennant Creek.  We went straight to the information centre on the outskirts of town.  They said the only caravan park that took dogs was on the north side of town and that there was a mine tour at 3pm.  So we went to the caravan park and set up for the night.  I did some more schoolwork before mum and dad went out to do some shopping.  They come back in an hour and we had to rush to get to the mine tour - it was already 2:50pm.  We got there just in time to go down and get our helmets and earmuffs.  We went down into the shaft and Bob, our tour guide, showed us a model of a mine just north of here.

Next we went to the jackhammer.  Bob demonstrated how to use one then he let us have a go - not really.

Next we went to the "blogger", which is a littel tractor towing a skip for carrying the rock.  Once again Bob showed us how to use it then let us stand on it.

Next was the expolsive store - there were none working of course.  Bob explained different fuses that miners use - there was one fuse that burnt at 75,000ft/sec!  Next was the crib room where the miners ate their linch and set off all their explosives.

Next was the toilets - sort of like long drops but they had a bag in it.  I feel sorry for the miners who had to go to the toilet in the dark.

We then went to the cage which lifted people and equipment up to the surface and back - we were 17m below gorund level.  They used a secret knocking system to explain what they wanted to do.

Then we looked at the diamond saw which was able to cut through rock by grinding it away leaving a core in the middle.  The heads were made of diamond and the core was smooth rock.  It was very expensive and apparantely people had been trying to buy the drill off them.  Even the Museum of Mining in Sydney was trying to take it.

We finished the tour and headed back through the tunnel to the entrance and back to the store.  We found a figure with a head hole in it, so I put my head through to have a photo taken.  Even Rosie had a turn.

We then went home so we could have a good night's rest.

Day 53: An Extrodinary Change of Events

Today we were going to leave for Tennant Creek, maybe.

We got up and decided we were going to stay another night at The Devil's Marbles because it was only $7 per night.  I decided to go for another walk that morning and I went to my little spot on top of the rocks and I sat there and read for a while.

I went back after an hour and then did some schoolwork with dad for three hours and it was fun.

After our schoolwork we had some lunch before I went for another walk and took some photos.

Then I did some more schoolwork for two hours before having a rest then some handwriting for an hour.  That took us to afternoon tea at 3pm.  Dad and I went to collect some firewood out of the park, on our way we had to drive around a dingo in the middel of the park.

I found a big piece so we broke it up and put it in the car.  We went back to start the fire and we started it successfully.  We kept it under control until 5pm before cooking chicken for dinner. We had dinner at about 7pm before watching a movie and going to bed at 9pm.

Day 52: The Devils Marbles

Today we were going to go to the Devils Marbles around 100km from Tennant Creek. We got up early that morning and got back on the road. Our first stop was Wycliffe Well, the UFO capital of the world. It's the UFO capital because the most UFO's have been spotted here, so the walls were covered in paintings of Aliens and stuff.

We went into the shop and bought a couple of things before getting back on the road to the Devils Marbles. We stopped at a place called Wauchope and had a rest. Dad and I went for a race to the top of this big pile of small stones, I won only by an inch.

We eventually got to the Devils Marbles and set up camp for the night.

When we'd gotten set up we just kicked backed and relaxed while reading in the warm sun for a couple of hours. It was about 2:00 before I decided to go for a walk through the marbles while dad went to collect fire wood. I found a path that lead up the side of the highest rocks right near the campsite so mum could take a photo of me.

I also found a little relaxing spot on top of a rock while there was another rock on top of it, I'm not going to you the exact location because it was my little area. When I got back it was almost 5:00 so dad and I got the fire ready. We cooked potatoes, onions and sausages on the fire while we made salad inside the van. We had dinner at 8:30 before going to bed.

Day 51: Goodbye Alice Springs at Last

Today was the day we were finally going to get out of Alice Springs. We got up in the morning to get out of the scout hall. We were on the road at about 9:30 and heading for Tennant Creek. We went to the highest point between Adeleide and Darwin, it was only a little stone structure with a pole on top. After we'd left there we headed for the Tropic of Capricorn which is the opposite to the Tropic of Cancer and is the  marker saying it was going to get warmer. When we got to the Tropic of Capricorn, we went to have a look. If two people had past it, they would have just said,"oh, theres the Tropic of Capricorn, lets keep going," but mum wanted to take me there for my education. The Tropic of Capricorn was only a big structure made of metal poles holding up a metal model of Earth. We left the Tropic of Capricorn and continued heading to Tennant Creek. We ended up stopping at a little place on the side of the road called Taylors Creek, jam-packed with tents, caravans and campervans. We set up and then did the things we normally do such as school work and tidying up the van. It was pretty late when we finished watching a movie and finished pottering around, so we went to bed.
